Call for applications to join a European training programme in documentary cinema

Thanks to an agreement between the ICIB and the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival, up to 10 Balearic filmmakers will be able to take part in this professional initiative

This year, the ICIB and the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival have joined forces to bring the third session of the prestigious Emerging Producers programme to the island of Mallorca. A European initiative specialised in documentary cinema, which, thanks to this cooperation, will open up to the Balearic industry with the aim of strengthening the professional fabric of the discipline. On this occasion, a maximum of 10 regional filmmakers will have the opportunity to take part in the programme.

The training will take place in Palma between 16 and 20 June 2025. Over the course of the different activities, the Balearic participants will work alongside the 18 European filmmakers selected by the renowned Czech festival. Together with Mallorcan director Miguel Eek, who is already part of this distinguished group of filmmakers, participants from the Islands will gain in-depth knowledge of the characteristics of the film market and take part in professional workshops organised by Ji.hlava IDFF. The ultimate aim is to increase the potential for future European co-productions.

The call for applications is open to both film producers and directors. To be admitted to the programme, regional filmmakers must meet three key requirements. First, they must have at least three years of experience in the local film market, demonstrate professional growth potential, and show the ambition to develop actively within the European market. Secondly, they must have produced a feature-length or mid-length documentary that has been commercially distributed in cinemas and screened at festivals. Although preference will be given to documentaries, fiction or hybrid films will also be accepted. Finally, they must be able to follow the programme’s activities in English.

The deadline for submitting applications is 18 May (inclusive). Interested candidates must send two documents, both in English, to the ICIB’s email address (info@icib.caib.es). The first is a brief presentation including a filmography, current projects in development, and contact details. The second is a motivation letter outlining the applicant’s experience with different forms of film distribution, as well as questions they may have regarding the future of film distribution. The letter should also demonstrate the candidate’s commitment and dedication to auteur cinema.

It should also be noted that all selected producers and filmmakers will have their meals covered during the programme’s official schedule. Additionally, for participants residing in Menorca, Ibiza or Formentera, the ICIB will also cover accommodation expenses for the duration of the event.
