La Misericòrdia has hosted since this morning the first of four working days through which this event will bring to the table the challenges facing a discipline in constant evolution
A panel on the talent of the archipelago, the island premiere of Mallorca Confidencial, and the five projects selected for the pitch sessions are three of the Balearic pillars of a global gathering
The Balearic Islands will become this week one of the most relevant industrial hubs within the audiovisual landscape. Through the Balearic Islands Institute of Cultural Industries (ICIB), the archipelago will host one of the benchmark events in digital innovation within this very discipline: Conecta Magaluf Mallorca. An international-scale initiative which, in addition to bringing to the table the central axes shaping the global development of the audiovisual sector, will also help place the autonomous territory on the professional map of an industry undergoing constant transformation.
This Monday, with La Misericòrdia in Palma serving as the inaugural venue for Conecta, the wide range of activities making up the programme of the initiative has already begun. On this occasion, through an industrial debate space called Creative Lab, a shared reflection has been opened around the future challenges emerging on the horizon of the discipline itself.
Professionals’ impressions
As expressed by the managing director of ICIB, Diana de la Cuadra, “today marks the beginning of a great opportunity to turn the Balearic Islands into one of the industrial epicentres of the audiovisual sector. Not only because some of the essential foundations for the future of the discipline will be discussed here, but also because Conecta will offer the possibility of generating professional synergies with multiple world-class audiovisual operators”. With these words, De la Cuadra also highlighted the role of the initiative “as a meeting point, also with institutions, to jointly address the new challenges facing the sector”.
Director, screenwriter and producer Paco Torres, one of the speakers on the use of artificial intelligence, stated that “Conecta is an event that brings together outstanding professionals and therefore creates industrial synergies between the national and international ecosystem and the local industry”. And Álvaro Iglesias, founder and executive producer of Solworks, also pointed out that “hosting Conecta here is essential so that producers from all over the world can discover the Balearic Islands. Not only because of their locations, but also because of the excellent work that local producers based in the archipelago can offer”.
The Balearic participation
It should also be noted that the Balearic presence will continue to shape Conecta Magaluf Mallorca until next Thursday, 28 May. Tomorrow, at 3:45 p.m., a round table on the role of the Balearic Islands in the audiovisual industry will take place at the Melià Calvià Beach Hotel. The talk will feature the participation of the head of ICIB, the aforementioned Diana de la Cuadra, while also giving the floor to Kiko Domínguez, representing APAIB, and Joe Templeton, leading figure of the association The Base.
Also on Tuesday, the professional panel entitled “creating today: new talents and projects in incubation” will take place, featuring Mallorcan screenwriter Ferran Bex. Later that evening, the island premiere of the film Mallorca Confidencial, co-produced by the Balearic company Cinètica Produccions, will be screened at 8 p.m. at the Auditòrium de Peguera. On Wednesday, the pitch sessions will take centre stage for the autonomous community, with up to five Balearic projects selected to compete in this area of the event, alongside a sixth work which, although not strictly a regional production, is directed by the equally Balearic filmmaker Toni Bestard. The programme will conclude next Thursday with a film-location route starting in the heart of Calvià and extending throughout the Serra de Tramuntana.
